Melodic Contour Extraction for Indian Classical Vocal Music
نویسندگان
چکیده
The problem of pitch tracking of the singing voice in the presence of Indian percussive interference, specifically the tabla, is considered. To overcome the problems due to this particular type of interference, a pitch tracker is used that applies dynamic programming (DP) based smoothing on pitch estimates obtained from a spectral-domain pitch detection algorithm (PDA) that uses harmonic matching. Experiments on real and simulated signals show the superiority of the spectral domain PDA over a correlation domain PDA in terms of pitch detection accuracy and suitability of the PDA output for post-processing. A new smoothing cost function is proposed and evaluated. The paper formulates general rules guiding the choice of cost functions participating in the DP based post-processing for this particular problem.

Identifying Indian Classical Music Styles using Melodic Contours
A prominent categorization of Indian classical music is the Hindustani and Carnatic traditions. The distinction is geographical with the two styles having evolved under distinctly different historical and cultural influences. Both styles are grounded in the melodic and rhythmic framework of raga and tala. The styles differ along dimensions such as structure of a performance, aesthetics, voice p...

متن کاملDetecting Melodic Motifs from Audio for Hindustani Classical Music
Melodic motifs form essential building blocks in Indian Classical music. The motifs, or key phrases, provide strong cues to the identity of the underlying raga in both Hindustani and Carnatic styles of Indian music. Thus the automatic detection of such recurring basic melodic shapes from audio is of relevance in music information retrieval. The extraction of melodic attributes from polyphonic a...
متن کاملImproved Melodic Sequence Matching for Query Based Searching in Indian Classical Music
Time-series pattern matching techniques have recently been extensively applied to the task of melodic phrase retrieval from audio for Indian classical vocal music. The conversion to a relatively sparse representation by retaining only flat regions of the pitch contour and introducing domain driven cost functions in the string search have been reported to show some reduction in retrieval accurac...
متن کاملThe visual/kinesthetic effects of melodic contour in musical notation as it affects vocal timbre in singers of classical and music theater repertoire.
The purpose of this investigation was to obtain information from professional singers active in performing of both classical and music theater repertoire with regard to the visual/kinesthetic effect of melodic contour in musical notation as it affects vocal timbre. The evaluation of data gathered during the study indicates that there is reason to investigate the resulting postural shifts of the...
متن کاملApplications of a Semi-automatic Melody Extraction Interface for Indian Music
Automatic extraction of the melody from polyphonic music recordings is a challenging problem for which no general solutions currently exist. We present a novel interface for semi-automatic melody extraction with the goal to provide highly accurate pitch tracks of the lead voice with minimal user intervention. Audio-visual feedback facilitates the validation of the obtained melodic contour, and ...
